Computed tomography (CT) of the chest uses special x-ray equipment to examine abnormalities found in other imaging tests and to help diagnose the cause of unexplained cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, or fever.
The routine (regular) CT scan of the chest is performed to diagnose peripheral and central lung tumors, to identify tuberculous process at an early stage, to conduct differential diagnosis of inflammatory and neoplastic processes in lungs, as well as to visualize minute emphysematous bullae in the lung parenchyma which may lead to a spontaneous pneumothorax.
CT of the chest with high resolution allows to detect and make a differential diagnosis of inflammatory and neoplastic processes in interstitial lung disease (sarcoidosis, idiopathic fibrosing alveolitis).
CT of the chest with bolus contrasting in central lung cancer allows to clearly identify location and size of the tumor, its relation to the vessels and mediastinum, as well as the nature of the metastasis which is extremely important when planning a surgery.
Dynamic CT of the chest with bolus contrasting through dynamics assessment of accumulation of contrast agent allows to estimate tumor malignancy process in lungs with 98-99% probability rate.
CT of the abdomen and pelvic organs helps to reveal the entire spectrum of pathological changes of the liver, gall bladder, intestines, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, uterus and ovaries. The use of bolus contrasting (special intravenous contrast agent) greatly increases the informativeness of CT exams and allows to differentiate benign and malignant processes in organs with a high degree of accuracy.
CT of the brain is one of the most common and important types of examinations. This type of exam allows to diagnose a brain tumor, a brain hemorrhage (stroke) with high accuracy, as well as a number of other pathological changes in the brain. Special techniques such as with a special program for neuronavigation allow to create an accurate virtual "layout" of the brain of a particular patient, which is absolutely necessary for a proper planning of neurosurgical surgery.
CT of the spine is indispensable for diagnosis of all types of pathology of intervertebral discs (protrusions, extrusions, hernia), degenerative diseases of the vertebral column (osteochondrosis, scoliosis, deforming spondylosis, spondyloarthrosis), damage of bone structure of the vertebrae (tumors, metastases, osteoporotic changes).
CT also identifies a number of specific spinal injuries, the diagnosis of which by conventional radiography is extremely difficult even for experienced radiologists and trauma physicians (compression fractures of the vertebral bodies of I degree, arches fractures, transverse and joint processes of the vertebrae).
CT of bones and joints through the use of modern computer technologies and fine quantitative assessment of X-ray bone density helps reveal a number of bone injuries that are often not detected by conventional X-ray techniques. At the present level of development of medicine it is mandatory not only to identify gross, obvious damages of the bones, which are clearly visible in plain radiographs and which are understood even by a person without medical education, but also the so-called "cracks" (bone fractures without displacement of fragments) the diagnosis of which often causes difficulty even for experienced physicians. Quite often, such fractures are not visualized in plain radiographs, whereas stratified exam of bone structures in CT exam with the “slice” thickness of 0.5-1 mm easily allows to reveal even the smallest violation of the integrity of the bone.
It is of great importance both for the proper treatment and for the solution of a number of expert questions (for example, when deciding on the payment of insurance, or in determining the severity of bodily injuries).
